Back in 2015 I set out a goal to grow not only my website but my business as a whole. When it came to search terms such as “Web Design” and “Computer Repair” I showed up pretty well in areas such as Canastota, Oneida, and Rome NY. In fact my website would often show up multiple times on the first page depending on what keywords you entered.
My biggest struggle though was in Syracuse New York. Syracuse as you know, is on of the larger areas in Central New York and that means a lot of competition. There’s nothing wrong with that though because competition makes you work harder to achieve your goals and to prove to your current clients, and future clients that you deserve their business. That’s why it was important for me to increase me SEO rankings in the Syracuse area. When I first started my blog I was nowhere to be found. If people from Syracuse were finding me, it wasn’t because of my Google Rankings.
The last time i updated my blog regarding my SEO efforts, things were beginning to improve. I was starting to show up mostly in the third pages, sometimes in the fourth. Certainly nothing to brag about, but it was starting to show results. It was also a reminder that SEO isn’t built overnight. I’ve been working on keywords like “Syracuse NY Web Design” for almost a month now and I still have a long way to go.
Current Syracuse Web Design Ranking:
As of today my results have varied but they are rewarding enough to show my progress and also keep me focused on my long term goals. You’ll see on the photo below that I have two different results. When it comes to the Yahoo and Bing search engines I show up in the Top 10. This means that more often than not, Thayer2Design will show up on the first page. In terms of Google, things are a little different. Thayer2Design currently averaging the 2nd or 3rd page. This is a solid improvement from where we first started. In 2016 our goal will to increase these SEO rankings even more and get them more in line with other cities such as Canastota and Oneida.
What Have I Learned:
My journey is half way there. My goal was to be on the first page in Syracuse NY and I have successfully done that on Yahoo and Bing. Now its time to keep pushing forward for “Web Design near Syracuse NY” on Google. There are a few things that I believe will help me do that. This is what I have learned…
SEO by Yoast:
Every website that I built has the plugin called “SEO By Yoast”. This is a great plugin to help you with the basics of SEO. It allows you to set individual meta tags for each page. For those unfamiliar with this term, the meta tags are what helps Google identify and place your site on their listings. This includes the title of each page and a brief description of the page. This plugin will also review your pages and give it a color grade. Red means your website needs some work, Yellow means that you’re doing OK but could use some improvements. While a green rating means that your page is SEO friendly.
There has been a discussion lately in regards to SSL Certificates and what they can do for your website. In general an SSL is a good thing to have, especially if have a shopping cart on your website. It keeps customer information safe and away from those who might want to do harm to your website. But does it improve your Google Rankings? The answer is yes and no. For the most part an SSL certificate won’t produce a lot of results in terms of rankings. You might see a small improvement but that’s about it. Google has said that there are many other things you could be doing on your website that will produce more results. In other words, adding an SSL Certificate to your site is a long term improvement, not a quick term SEO fix.
